What it feels like to be there...

Belize is an amazing adventure playground: turquoise oceans, white sand islands, vibrant reefs, startling caves, verdant jungle and ancient temples. It really is quite the most spectacular place – and not short of luxurious yet laidback lodges to pass the evenings in either. It is home to the Great Blue Hole, one of the world’s premier dive sites.

What to do there…

Placencia is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Scuba-diving, Sailing, Boat-trips, Fishing, Cycling, Caving, Nature-walks, Cultural-visits, Historical-sites.
  • Other: Snorkelling, Swimming, Kid-friendly, Waterfall-bathing, Spa/Massage.

Where to stay…

Staying in the stunning villas and cottages of 5* Turtle Inn is like being on your own tropical film set – as you might expect of a resort designed by a certain Mr and Mrs Coppola. The stylish cabanas are artistically furnished and the crew will direct you off on a fantastic range of adventures and experiences in the local area.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Placencia is 2.5-3h from both Belize City and San Ignacio by car. San Ignacio area is about 2h from Belize City.
  • Weather: hot all year round with a cooling breeze, Jun-Nov is wetter and has a higher risk of hurricanes.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the second largest reef in the world and a great place to dive, whatever your level. The stunning caves you see on land are often replicated under the ocean, but colonised and capped by coral. Amazing! If you prefer your fun on land, check out the Mayan ruins scattered throughout the jungle. Less touristy than some Mexican sites, you can enjoy them in peace. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Mayan Blue

What it feels like to be there...

Belize is most famous for its white-sand cayes and azure seas, but it also has some amazing rainforests to trek in and the most extensive cave system in all of Central America. There are loads of great (and relatively un-touristy) Mayan temple sites to check out, or you can head across the border into Guatemala to see the big daddy Tikal.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The main airport in Belize City is connected to many US air hubs, but as yet there are few direct connections elsewhere. Local transport infrastructure is basic, but the distances are relatively small. Hurricanes seldom strike (2-3 a decade), so prepare for lots of sun.

The bright Caribbean sun bakes the white sand of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the trade winds cool your skin, and all is right with the world. Grab a yacht and set sail to see this area at its most exciting and beautiful.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The airport in Beef Island/Tortola services BVI, though flights to St Thomas (US Virgin Islands) can be used with an onward charter flight. All international flights have a stop in other Caribbean islands. Ferries and speedboats whisk you on to your end destination. The weather is fine all year, with what little rain there is primarily falling Sep-Nov.

What it feels like to be there...

With iconic cloud forest, jungles, mountains and secluded coastal bays, Costa Rica has unrivalled biodiversity, making it something of a modern-day Garden of Eden. Climb through the rainforest canopies growing on an active volcano, then raft the rivers that flow off its sides. Bathe in ancient hot springs, swim under dramatic waterfalls, surf rolling waves and watch turtles hatch and flap down the beach.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Most flights arrive via the capital San José, but smaller Liberia airport also services the west coast from several major US airport hubs. The road network to tourist sites is good. The weather is typically hot and humid, especially in the rainforests near the centre of the country.

5* Turtle Inn is a true labour of love. Less than a year after Francis and Eleanor Coppola acquired this beachside refuge in 2001, it was ruined by the forces of Hurricane Iris. Turning disaster into triumph, the Coppolas led a two-year reclamation project, creating a magnificent resort that is consistently ranked among the best in Central and South America.

This seafront hideaway combines natural wonders with luxury style. Accommodations are in individual thatched cottages, decorated with handcrafted Balinese furnishings and naturally cooled by the ever-present sea breezes. Just steps beyond your private deck, the white-sand beach dissolves into the clear Caribbean ocean. In addition, two swimming pools offer a choice of freshwater and saltwater bathing. The unique location also provides a wealth of exciting activities. The coral reef just offshore offers some of the best diving and scuba in the world. Inland hikes to hidden lagoons, canoe trips up the Monkey River and the short bicycle ride into our local, typically Belizean town will also enrich your experience of this magical country.

What it feels like to be there...

The Mayans had a reputation for brutality, ritual sacrifice and temple building. Happily, the latter is the only legacy they left us, although the natural environment is almost worth the risk of becoming an ‘offering’! The region is densely packed with an array of splendours, from near-impenetrable jungle, cool mountain ranges and fertile coffee-scented valleys, to white sandy beaches and wild waters.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The travel hubs of the US, especially Miami, tend to serve this region well, but some of the national capitals now have direct services from the European super-airports. On arrival, local charter flights can be expensive and the quality of road infrastructure varies. Climate-wise, this region is famous for perfect sunshine. Well… nearly: on the Caribbean coast (July-Oct) you will need to keep an ear out for the odd hurricane and the rainforests obviously get wet. Obtaining local currency with bank cards can be tricky outside tourist areas, but US dollars are also widely accepted. Spanish is the main language, but these days English is generally quite well understood.
