What it feels like to be there...

Bled is a fascinating mix of West and East, old and new, active and laid back, yet somehow it succeeds in being all things to all people. Whether you gallop through the verdant Alpine hills, sip sparkling wine from your hot air balloon, descend a steep mountain on your bike or row across the still surface of the lake, a fun time is assured.

What to do there…

Lake Bled is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Lake-swimming, Boat-trips, Hiking, Cycling, Mountain-biking, Rock-climbing, Horse-riding, Hot-air-ballooning, Rafting, Kayaking, Hydro-speeding, Skiing/Snowboarding, Cultural-visits, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Swimming, Lake-side-lido, Golf.

Where to stay…

The 5* Grand Hotel Toplice is a 1930s icon set right on the lake and oozing authentic style and splendour. Take one of their rowing boats for a fabulous tour of the lake. 4* Vila Bled is a presidential manor house by the water, packed with old-fashioned Eastern European charm, warm hospitality and exciting activities.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: By car, Bled and Idrija are both about 1h from Ljubljana and <1.5h apart. Predjama is 1h from Ljubljana.
  • Weather: warm Apr-Oct, wet Oct-Nov, cold/snowy Nov-Mar.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

For a place with so many exciting, rejuvenating adventures on tap, the hotels and restaurants of Lake Bled have a charming, old-world quality. But loosen the collars of the well-to-do and you will find it is the same crowd jumping down a gorge with a hydro-speed float and distance swimming the refreshing lakes. Enjoy the rituals of dressing for dinner and acknowledging fellow guests. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. • Weather: warm/showery May-Oct, cool/snowy Nov-Apr.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The slopes in these valleys have made the area famous for skiing, but don’t for a minute believe they go unused in summer. Downhill scooting is the new and accessible adventure activity that’s taking the area by storm. You leap on an elongated scooter with big fat tyres and plot your course down the mountains back to the gondola ski lifts. Lots of exhilaration and little effort, what more could you need? What it feels like to be there...

Beneath the mighty peak of the Matterhorn is the pretty, bustling town of Zermatt. The quiet buzz of electric cars is the only traffic noise, but the strains of jolly Alpine bands spill out from the shops on to the streets. Chocolate-brown houses, laden with flower boxes, contrast with the jagged, icy mountains on the close horizon.

What to do there…

Zermatt is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Skiing/Snowboarding, Off-Piste, Sledging, Snow-shoeing, Ice-climbing, Ice-skating, Paragliding, Spa/Massage, Cultural-visits, Hiking, Mountain-biking, Fishing, Rock-climbing, Downhill-scooters.
  • Other: Gym/Fitness, Swimming, Yoga, Pilates, Cinema.

Where to stay…

High on a cliff-face above the centre of town sits gorgeous 5* The Omnia. Accessed through a tunnel and 45m lift through the rock, the drama of your entry is surpassed only by the amazing views from within. The epitome of designer chic, this hotel aims to magnify the splendour of nature and the elements, ensuring you an exciting stay.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Zermatt and Montana are about 3-3.5h drive from Geneva, Zurich and Basel or 2.5h from Bern (similar by train).
  • Weather: warm/showery May-Oct, cool/snowy Nov-Apr.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The peaks around Zermatt have the altitude for year-round skiing, but in summer this area is a mountaineer’s paradise. Scaling the summit of the Matterhorn has been every climber’s dream since Edward Whymper first conquered it in 1865. Sadly, four of his party fell to their deaths on the descent, but the route is now established and readily achievable with the right guide, equipment and coaching. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: What's the Matter?

What it feels like to be there...

Russia is the largest country in the world, spanning from Europe, across Asia to the edge of the Americas. The range of its societies and environments is astounding, yet it has a proud unified culture and a style all its own. Despite their austere, frosty demeanour, the people have a wicked sense of humour and a lust for adventure.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Moscow is the main travel hub, though St Petersburg also has direct international flights. From here, connecting flights service the rest of the country, including the Black Sea resort Sochi. Arctic winds keep temperatures cold to mild all year round, so dress warmly and elegantly to match the locals.

What it feels like to be there...

Slovenia is blessed with an amazing Alpine landscape, and the al-fresco gelateria in Ljubljana could just as easily be in Milan. This country is fascinating in its own right though, and ripe for adventure travel. Try rafting, climbing, canyoning, caving or lake swimming – or check out the amazing castles to get a feel for the local culture.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The country’s main airport is in the capital Ljubljana, and from there this pretty country is small enough to make travel overland both practical and pleasurable. Dress for warm, sunny days, but take a jacket to wrap up in for the Alpine evenings. Since joining the Eurozone, currency and visas are straightforward.

What it feels like to be there...

Switzerland keeps you so well entertained that burning off those fondue and chocolate calories is a breeze. The rugged mountains issue a challenge, but the picturesque valleys say take your time – luckily, the locals love to help with both. Picture yourself with a mulled wine in front of a log fire after a fun-packed Alpine day.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Zurich, Basel and Geneva are the busiest airports in Switzerland, and while mountain roads take time to navigate, the amazing scenery is a worthwhile reward. Dress warmly, with lots of layers and a good wind-proof on top. Getting local currency is easy, but remember you aren’t in the Eurozone, so plan how much you need.

What it feels like to be there...

For many people this region conjures up visions of spy dramas and narrow escapes. The Communist era in the East left behind lots of interesting sights and a few strange practices. But the region’s beautiful landscapes, grand castles and homely food are a recipe for pure enjoyment. Relax and be prepared for exciting surprises!

Some practical information worth knowing…

This region is easily reached using connecting flights from all the European super-airports. Cheap flights are common even to smaller cities in tourist areas. The road network is generally good. In the former Communist states, some architecture, infrastructure and furnishing styles look functional or dated to a Western eye. The service style is also often perceived as abrupt because here it is good manners to be unobtrusive, not familiar or hands on. Visas can usually be obtained on arrival now, but queues can take time. Getting money from bank machines, airports and hotels is largely straightforward, especially in urban areas.
