What it feels like to be there...

Kruger Park’s myriad of stunning lodges make it the most luxurious safari park in the world, and also one of the best. The dry plains camouflage lions perfectly, so watching this apex beast making a kill is very much on the agenda. Elephants bathe in the shady tree-lined watering holes while crocodiles lurk below and leopards crouch above.

Kruger is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Safari, Game-drives, Nature-walks, Photography, Cultural-visits, Scenic-flights, Elephant-riding, Bird-watching, Wine-tasting, Star-gazing.

Where to stay…

The exquisite suites of ultra-luxury 5* Leopard Hills have private plunge pools overlooking a watering hole. At stunning 5* Ulusaba you can experience both epic cliff-side panorama suites and intimate jungle treehouses – and even indulge in a spot of tennis. Pafuri Camp has fabulous 4* en-suite cabins set in a gentle shady river bend.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Jo’burg to Kruger Park is a 6h drive, or a 1h flight to Nelspruit plus 2h drive, or a 1.5h direct charter flight to selected reserves. Jo’burg to Richards Bay is 1.5h flight.

South Africa blends colonial luxury with the amazing drama of its natural landscape to great effect. You can choose to stay in grand estate houses on the vineyards along the Garden Route or camp out in unbelievable style in the Safari parks. Sip Shiraz and doff your cap to a passing lioness.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Cape Town and Johannesburg are the main travel hub airports for South Africa, and from these there are local services to all major cities. The road network is smooth, though, so long distances can be covered at a decent pace if you want a better feel for the place. The climate is temperate, so dress for spring/summer all year round.

What it feels like to be there...

Tanzania’s safari parks are a vision of the world early man must have encountered: luscious forests, warm plains, plentiful prey and savage predators. Life plays out in front of you like a nature documentary, bringing home the wonder of man’s ability to adapt and survive. Grab a scuba tank and see the warm waters – filled with beautiful corals, dolphins and turtles – in a way your ancestors could only dream of.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Dar Es Salaam is the main travel hub airport (also Nairobi, Kenya) and local airlines can be used to many smaller airports across the country. The boat to Zanzibar is a fun alternative way to arrive, but overland journeys elsewhere, while beautiful, are often long, hot and dusty. Get your safari khakis out and insist on a 4x4!

What it feels like to be there...

For a long time now, Uganda has been largely safe to travel around and it offers adventurers some truly life-changing experiences. The most amazing has to be the ‘Gorillas in the mist’ tour up in the mountain rainforests of the far west. On your way back, you can raft near the source of the mighty Nile and take in a safari or two in the many quiet game parks.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The only major airport in Uganda is at Entebbe, just south of the capital Kampala. After that, jump in a 4x4 and hit the road. As you get up into the mountains the heat lessens but the humidity of the rainforest keeps everything feeling warm. Breathable fabrics are vital because it can get sweaty.

Regularly voted one of the best hotels in the world, the unique 3* Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge clings to the rim of the largest and most perfect volcanic crater on Earth. Long and low, the lodge is built from local river stone and camouflaged with indigenous vines. Designed to blend completely into the landscape, it is entirely invisible from the floor of the Crater 600 metres below. Deep within the Crater, enclosed by towering walls, you can mingle with some 25,000 large mammals wandering the plains, lakes and forests of ‘the land that time forgot', ruled by enormous bull elephants, rhinos and lions.

The lodge takes its inspiration from the so-called ‘Cradle of Mankind', the prehistoric site of Olduvai Gorge, which lies close by. Linked by arched stone passages and timbered decks, its walls are decorated with stylized prehistoric cave paintings and lit by flaring torches. At the stone heart of the lodge burns a glowing fire, which is kept constantly alight. Decorated with cave paintings, the rooms are strung around the Crater rim. Each has its own rock-enclosed balcony, and all enjoy completely uninterrupted views of the volcanic amphitheatre far below.

Set on a wide curve of the mighty Rufiji River, 5* Sand Rivers Selous was originally built by Richard Bonham in 1984 who used this area of the Selous for his famous portered walking safaris, when the area was all but unknown.

The lodge is both expedition base, and safari retreat; it's small but beautifully formed, with an imposing mess, swimming pool, excellent cooking and careful, at-your-whim service. Sand Rivers Selous is also the base for some of Tanzania's best safari guides who are there to take you out for daily adventures; boating on the Rufiji, weaving past hippopotamus and crocodile; driving on the trail of lion or wild dog; an elephant bush walk; a night sleeping out under the stars, or fishing in solitude, barefoot on a river rock.

Set amidst the canopy of an age-old indigenous forest, 5* Tsala Treetop Lodge is a lavish celebration of the spirit of Africa. Emulating the monumental ruins of an ancient central African civilisation, the impressive stone-masonry entrance flanked by water features leads into a magnificent foyer supported by polished Blackwood columns.

The afro-baroque décor with its earthy colours, rich textures and handcrafted fittings draws inspiration from the diverse cultures of Africa, yet remains integrated with the sophistication of the Western world. Whether from the exotically appointed dining room, the intimate glassed-in lounge, or the large open decks high above the forest floor, the views are all breathtakingly beautiful, encompassing lush forests extending across rolling valleys towards distant hills.

5* Ulusaba's stunning rooms and suites are split between two distinctive lodges. Rock Lodge is 'Heaven in Heaven', perched high on the summit of a koppie with amazing views over the South African bush below. Nearly 500 metres away is Safari Lodge, known as 'Heaven on Earth'. Built along the banks of a dry riverbed, Safari Lodge guests cross swing bridges between the exquisite tree house style rooms. For the ultimate experience, guests can share their time between both lodges.

When not occupied on a walking safari or twice daily game drive, take a dip in the swimming pools or indulge in a spa treatment. For the more active, there are tennis courts and gyms available. Try a few South African wines from the wine cellar and after dinner enjoy a spot of stargazing at the bush observatory.

Nestled in luxuriant rainforest on it’s own private island, mid-stream in the mighty Nile, 5* Wildwaters Lodge is breathtaking. Thick vegetation covers the island allowing each of the timber-floored rooms to have private, breathtaking views over the River Nile and it’s rapids. The expansive, canvas walled, thatched roofed, rooms each boasts a private deck with elegant free-standing bath and wash basin carved from the local pink granite. Softly lit with hand-made furniture, you can relax in comfort on this island paradise listening to the thunder of the Nile rapids, and the calls of the many species of bird who call the island home.

Elevated wooden walkways gracefully link the rooms to the restaurant and bar area and offer an unforgettable walk through the heart of the forest. The main lodge is located unbelievably on a solid rock peninsula, amidst the rapids of the River Nile. Relax here cooled by the constant breezes from the racing rapids or plunge into the adjacent natural swimming pool carved by the river over millennia from the pink granite. This is the ultimate location to enjoy one of last wild areas of the entire Nile.

What it feels like to be there...

Since the dawn of humanity we have been fascinated and frightened by Africa’s landscape and wildlife. As children we learn about lions, elephants and gorillas in the jungle before we can even name the town we live in. In our mind’s eye Africa is a place for great adventures, from trekking into rainforests, across plains and rolling dunes, to admiring the coral islands and luscious deltas.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam, Cape Town and Johannesburg are the main airports in the region, but other national carriers have decent connections to the main European air hubs. Local flights can be costly, especially charters, but the road infrastructure is often only penetrable by 4x4 outside the cities, so it can be a good option. The heat of the day bakes the earth hard, but temperatures drop away rapidly at night. Pack a warm fleece and windcheater for the evenings, and light, breathable clothes for the day. Visas can usually be arranged on arrival, but you will need US dollars to cover the fees ($20-50pp). Dollars are widely accepted for other payments, but local currencies can be obtained relatively easily in the more modern towns, airports and banks.
