What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Petra is the most spectacular site in a country full of wonders. Give yourself 4-5h to explore it fully, especially if you make the fabulous trek up to the monastery and panoramic viewpoints. The moment you catch your first glimpse of the majestic library as you emerge from the winding canyons will stay with you forever. Breathtaking! We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

From the Dead Sea to the Red Sea, Jordan is a land of warm welcomes, beautiful architecture and exciting landscapes. Unexpected treasures can be found around every corner but, in the finest Arab tradition, you need a knowledgeable, wizened guide (and a 4x4) to truly experience it.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Amman and Aqaba are the two main air hubs for Jordan, and the country’s excellent main roads make overland travel a breeze, but you will need a 4x4 to get off the beaten track. The usual Arabic long-sleeved, light clothes are best for the heat and desert dust.

What it feels like to be there...

The Moroccan Riad is the original boutique hotel. Beautiful architecture and design combine to create a perfect cool oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of an Arabian metropolis. Throw in a twist of ‘Bedouin tents in the windy desert’ and you have a place that understands and fulfils your adventure fantasy. Find a café and relax with a strong coffee while they prepare an amazing Tagine.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Marrakesh is the largest airport in the country, but many smaller tourist spots are well connected. 4x4s are popular and make even the trickier roads easy to travel on. Wear long sleeves and light clothes and find the shady side of the street – it gets really hot.

5* Heure Bleue Palais has conserved the architecture of a traditional Moroccan riad and added all the amenities befitting a worldly hotel. The common areas, restaurant and rooms open onto a courtyard with an ornate fountain. In true Moroccan tradition, that is the core of the building. The hotel’s colonial-style bar presents a subdued ambiance with subtle lighting and plush English decor.

Essaouira is one of the most unforgettable cities of Morocco. Formerly known as Mogador, it is famous for its myriad shades of blue: blue skies, deep blue sea, blue trawlers and sardine boats loaded with their catch of the day, tiny blue boats huddled against each other, blue shutters and doors on bright white walls. See it by camel, horse, bike, quad or 4x4, or if you are feeling really adventurous, head to the beach for kite-boarding, windsurfing or sailing.

Wadi Rum, also known as ‘The Valley of the Moon’ is one of the most stunning desert landscapes in the world. It is the result of a colossal, geologic upheaval several million years ago that thrust granite and sandstone outcrops through the surface of the earth. Carved by wind and water, the cliffs stand like skyscrapers in the hot sand reaching heights of 1,840 meters while changing colour throughout the day as the sun reflects off them.

The area has become a paradise for mountaineers, campers and nature enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy the tranquillity of the boundless empty spaces on horse or camel back, or trek, scramble, and climb the mountains of Rum. The most intimate way to experience Wadi Rum is from enchanting 2.5* Luxury Bedouin Camp, featuring rustic Bedouin tents set off the tourist trail around a ‘dining and entertainment’ camp and shared eco- washrooms. A serious upgrade from a basic camp, this might not be real luxury, but at night you can easily see why they call it a 'million stars hotel'.

What it feels like to be there...

This region conjures up images of ancient adventures: a windswept camel rider at a luscious desert oasis; or an explorer unearthing a temple in a hidden canyon. From the moment you arrive, you get that intrepid feeling travellers crave. Dive the Red Sea, trek a mountain, climb the huge rock stacks in the local wadis, then in the balmy evening sit down and relax with a fragrant, heady hookah.

Some practical information worth knowing…

There are direct flights from most European capitals to all the capital cities and main tourist areas in the region. Local infrastructure is highly variable, with major roads generally good but local ones often little more than dirt tracks. The weather is hot – very hot – so pack light fabric clothes with long sleeves to protect from sunburn, and show respect for local customs. Visas can generally be obtained on arrival, but some countries have special regulations for Israelis and people who have visited Israel. Local currency is best obtained from airports and hotels.
