What it feels like to be there...

In a land of extremes, Southern Iceland is famous for its volcanoes, geysers and glaciers, as well as its hot tubs in the snow and icy vodka by warm fires. It is a place of often surprising natural beauty and contrasts, where flowers bloom in snowy meadows, the magnificent Northern Lights brighten the night sky and whales splash amid icebergs.

What to do there…

Southern Iceland is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 7 days:
  • Major: Northern-lights, Glacier-treks, Volcano-treks, Hiking, Snow-mobiles, Scenic-flights, Bird-watching, Whale-watching, Fishing, Rafting, Horse-riding.
  • Other: Golf, Jacuzzi, Spa/Massage, Quad-bikes, 4x4-tours.

Where to stay…

4* Hotel Ranga is a cosy, eccentric lodge on the banks of a salmon river near the famous Mt Hekla volcano. From Sep-Apr there is a high chance of viewing the Aurora from one of the outdoor geothermal hot-tubs. The proprietors’ passion for their country is infectious and they know all the secrets of a great adventure here.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Keflavik airport is 2h by car; Reykjavik city about 1h.
  • Weather: cool/cold all year round, freezing Dec-Mar.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Iceland is a magical, elemental place that charms your socks off. The hotels might not have hand-carved Italian marble sinks, but luxury isn’t about that here. It is more essential, to be found in experiences such as bathing in a volcano-heated lagoon, or eating fish caught fresh that day. Iceland is just full to the brim with exciting things to do and friendly, engaging people ready to share it all with you. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

There is a sense of excitement about walking where the Earth’s crust is so thin: all that bubbling heat waiting to envelop you. Trek over the volcanoes and amazing snowscapes on foot or by 4x4, then warm up in your own bubbling Jacuzzi. Head out at night and savour the clean Arctic air under the Aurora Borealis.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Reykjavik’s Keflavik Airport is the only major entry point, but (troublesome ash clouds aside) it has great links to European travel hubs and major capitals. The weather is always cold, so pack plenty of thick fleeces, under-layers and a weather-proof jacket – but don’t forget a swim suit for the geothermal pools!

What it feels like to be there...

The land of Husky dogs and intrepid arctic explorers, Norway is a place where humans live magnificently against the environmental odds. As wild and cold as it is outside, the locals have mastered the art of warm living. Enjoy snow crystals making your hair icy-crispy, safe in the knowledge a sauna isn’t far away.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Oslo is Norway’s largest and best-connected international airport, but Tromso (a 2.5h flight from Oslo) also runs a few international flights. Both service Norway’s many domestic airports, some of which take days to reach by car. The climate can be surprisingly hot in summer, but bitingly cold in winter, especially in the far north.

What it feels like to be there...

Much of far-northern Europe is freezing outside but warm to the core, with stylish wood-clad buildings, friendly peoples and the odd volcano. Enjoy your time in the snow and warm up with a hearty meal or sauna before popping out to try and spot the mysterious Northern Lights.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The European super-airports act as travel hubs, but every capital and major tourist area is serviced by air these days. Road quality is generally excellent, but in the frozen far north the occasional snow drift can cause minor delays. Dress for very chilly conditions outside, but remember that the log fires and under-floor heating will make it nice and cosy indoors. Visas can be obtained on arrival by most travellers, and local currency is readily available from the airport or banks, cash machines and hotels in all towns.
