What it feels like to be there...

Floating through the mild Pacific waters around the Galapagos, it feels like you are filming a wildlife documentary. Fantastic, unusual creatures with no fear of man allow you to get up close and personal. The underwater wonders are just as fabulous: seals, sea lions, manta rays and hammerheads make this a world-class dive site.

What to do there…

The Galapagos is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Boat-trips, Sailing, Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Hiking, Nature-walks, Photography, Bird-watching, Ecology.
  • Other: Snorkelling, Sun-bathing, Swimming, Jacuzzi, Library.

Where to stay…

The best way to see these amazing islands is from a boat. The key decision is whether you want an expedition vessel or a scuba diving live-aboard. We recommend 'Eclipse' as the best of the former and the ‘Galapagos Aggressors (I & II)’ for the latter.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Galapagos are a 2.5-4h flight from Quito via Guayaquil (connections vary). Cotacachi is 1.5h drive from Quito.
  • Weather: the mainland is warm and humid all year round, wetter Dec-May. Galapagos are dry and warm all year.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The Galapagos is about life; evolution playing out before your eyes. The diving is truly magnificent, so if you have any Cousteau fantasies, qualify before you come and log some warm-up dives. There is so much going on above the water and near the surface that you won’t miss out if you aren’t ready to take the plunge. Day after day of close encounters and perfect photo-opps will keep you fully entertained. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

Argentina is a rugged place, full of dramatic, exciting scenery, fascinating wildlife and welcoming locals. It is also a land of great variety: from the icebergs and glaciers in the frozen south, through the volcanoes and lakes of the centre, to the Gaucho plains and wine lands of the north. Adventures can be found at almost every turn.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Buenos Aires is the major airport hub for international flights, but other South American capitals are useful staging posts. Direct flights from Spain also head to several major cities. Local flight services are good, as are long-distance bus journeys if you have more time. A sturdy wind-proof is essential for days out in the amazing wilderness.

What an amazing variety Chile has – and compared with other places in this book, no one knows about it. That is great news for you! Explore in secluded style the most arid desert on earth, high Andean mountains, volcanoes and lakes, wine lands, beautiful seaside, frozen glaciers and even the ancient Moai statues out on Easter Island.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Chile is both well-connected and easy to fly around. The roads are also great, but distances and terrains make every drive a long one. Because flights are your best option, all the locations and extensions we recommend in Chile can be mixed and matched. Pack lots of layers, with wind-proofs for the mountains and plenty of sun cream.

What it feels like to be there...

Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands inspired Darwin to write his most famous work, The Origin of Species. The natural environment is so rich and varied it really is quite unlike any other. The rest of the country also serves to fascinate and entertain, with its mountains, plains, jungle and dramatic coastline offering adventures aplenty.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Capital Quito and Guayaquil in the south are the main airport hubs for the country, though Seymour Airport in the Galapagos also has a few international flights to Columbia, Panama and Miami, USA. Its equatorial location means weather is not especially seasonal, though the El Niño effect very occasionally brings huge downpours.

What it feels like to be there...

The mighty Incas of South America had their Capital in Cuzco, in the Andean mountains of Peru. Since its rediscovery in 1911, one image has best symbolised this civilisation – the sunset over Machu Picchu. The dramatic landscapes behind these sacred stones are a big draw for modern-day adventurers. Excellent rock climbing is abundant and the rivers are among the best rafting rapids in the world.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Flights into Peru typically arrive in Lima, though Cuzco airport has a few international connections to nearby South American capitals. The terrain is so steep that air travel is common even to small cities, but the overnight sleeper buses are amazing value and great quality. Local mountain roads are very precarious-looking. In the bright sun it can get warm, but generally layer up and bring an all-weather jacket.

4* Posada Puerto Bemberg was reborn from the ashes of a 1940's manor on the riverbanks. A park with 5000 native trees and plants from all over the Misiones region, creates and intense universe of greens, yellows, turquoises, lilacs and reds and transmits the jungle's soul to the Posada.

Trails, natural falls, walks among the treetops, a library with over 2500 books, the local Guaraní-culture's legends, an intimate restaurant with native cuisine and international refinement, and a swimming pool in the middle of the jungle give the Posada its exclusive and stylish character. Here is a place in synergy with its natural environment. The Posada promotes environmental sustainability in its actions, operations and activities: from their private reserve and nursery to the reforestation and nature programs. Stay, and live in harmony with the jungle.

What it feels like to be there...

Whether through Che’s ‘Motorcycle Diaries’, stories of sailors rounding the violent Cape Horn, or tales of the Incas at Machu Picchu, your first experience of South America was probably an adventure story. Happily, the continent lives up to the hype in every way and is also surprisingly easy to travel around. From mountain to desert to frozen seas, you just have to get out there and do it.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The main intercontinental travel hubs in the region are the big cities: Santiago, Buenos Aires, Rio, São Paulo and to a lesser extent Lima. It is also common to fly in from US travel hubs and get local connecting flights to all the smaller cities. The bus networks are amazing and the main roads good, but in the mountains things do get steep and scary. Altitude and latitude are the main influence on temperature, but the rising air currents over the mountains create very wet and very dry areas, so pack a waterproof, sun hat and lots of layers. Visas are generally available on arrival and getting local currency is straightforward in airports, urban centres and hotels.
