What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

There is something truly special about returning from an exciting day’s hike, lying back in a hot tub in a frozen wilderness and sipping champagne while your damp hair freezes and turns crunchy. Or taking a horse-ride through the snow to a lake where a great glacier ‘seeds’ sky-blue icebergs that float gently towards you. These are the moments that make Torres del Paine fantastical. What it feels like to be there...

What an amazing variety Chile has – and compared with other places in this book, no one knows about it. That is great news for you! Explore in secluded style the most arid desert on earth, high Andean mountains, volcanoes and lakes, wine lands, beautiful seaside, frozen glaciers and even the ancient Moai statues out on Easter Island.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Chile is both well-connected and easy to fly around. The roads are also great, but distances and terrains make every drive a long one. Because flights are your best option, all the locations and extensions we recommend in Chile can be mixed and matched. Pack lots of layers, with wind-proofs for the mountains and plenty of sun cream.

What it feels like to be there...

Whether through Che’s ‘Motorcycle Diaries’, stories of sailors rounding the violent Cape Horn, or tales of the Incas at Machu Picchu, your first experience of South America was probably an adventure story. Happily, the continent lives up to the hype in every way and is also surprisingly easy to travel around. From mountain to desert to frozen seas, you just have to get out there and do it.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The main intercontinental travel hubs in the region are the big cities: Santiago, Buenos Aires, Rio, São Paulo and to a lesser extent Lima. It is also common to fly in from US travel hubs and get local connecting flights to all the smaller cities. The bus networks are amazing and the main roads good, but in the mountains things do get steep and scary. Altitude and latitude are the main influence on temperature, but the rising air currents over the mountains create very wet and very dry areas, so pack a waterproof, sun hat and lots of layers. Visas are generally available on arrival and getting local currency is straightforward in airports, urban centres and hotels.
