What it feels like to be there...

Railay is a hidden oasis of beauty. Cut off from the mainland by high cliffs and dense jungle, this tiny peninsula is only accessible by boat. The area is packed with world-beating activities for body, mind and spirit – all from a beautiful luxury base. Neighbouring Phi-Phi Island is home to great diving and was the backdrop to the film.

What to do there…

Railay is packed with activities and perfect for 7 to 10 days:
  • Major: Rock-climbing, Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Cooking-classes, Art-classes, Boat-trips, Cave-treks, Nature-walks, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Gym/Fitness, Sailing, Windsurfing, Swimming, Tennis, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

Home to one of our favourite super-luxury hotels, Railay’s incredible natural environment can be enjoyed in effortless style at the 5* Rayavadee. The hotel exudes opulence and its private activity classes, spa services and fine dining are first class. Railay can also be enjoyed from the sleek, design-conscious 4* Bhu Nga Thani.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Krabi Airport is 1h away by car/speedboat. Phuket Airport is 3.5-4.5h away. Both airports are 1h from Bangkok.
  • Weather: Nov to May is peak season, but off-season offers great seclusion and the rains come in bursts from 2.30-4pm.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Railay has a chilled out, adventurous vibe. The long west beach is linked to the eastern bay by the peninsula’s only shopping strip, a tiny, sandy street with a great coffee and cocktails bar and ice cream parlour. You will share gorgeous cliffs, jungle, beaches and islands with tanned rock-climbers and playful monkeys, but the exclusive Phranang beach and best caves are all right next to Rayavadee. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Andaman Elements

What it feels like to be there...

The morning mist rolls through the hill tops, caressing the rice paddies and swirling around ornate temple spires. Art and cookery classes are available to intrigue the mind; jungle walks, elephant treks and climbing to energise the body; and meditation or yoga to enrich the soul. Let the ways of the hill-tribes refresh and enchant you in this luxurious haven.

What to do there…

Chiang Mai is packed with activities and perfect for 7 to 10 days:
  • Major: Cooking-classes, Art-classes, Cultural-visits, Historical-sites, Elephant-riding, Nature-walks, Bird-watching, Yoga, Meditation, Spa/Massage
  • Other: Gym/Fitness, Boat-trips, Rafting, Rock-climbing, Golf, Tennis, Cycling, Music, Swimming, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

Set in its own idyllic 60-acre nature park, surrounded by rolling hills and paddy fields, the 5* Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi is every bit as beautiful as any of the famous 300 temples of Chiang Mai. Its staff are experts at tailoring and arranging activities for every mood. Our other favourite is the elegantly modern designer 5* The Chedi Chiang Mai.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Chiang Mai airport is 15 min away. Bangkok flights take 1h, with connections to most Asian capitals.
  • Weather: Nov to Mar has cool nights, but days are hot year-round. May to Oct the rains come in bursts from 2.30-4pm.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Get a local guide to take you into the mountains to spend time with the hill tribes. They are amazing and friendly people who live a fascinating lifestyle, which they will share with you in a very engaging way. Chiang Mai is famous in Thailand as the place to learn to cook, so taking a class will reward you time and again back home. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

Borneo has all the ingredients for an amazing adventure: colourful coral reefs, turquoise seas, white sand, dense jungle, deep dark caves, a towering mountain, and an orangutan or two. What more could you need? How about a stylish eco-lodge to relax in while you observe - and help conserve - this island paradise?

What to do there…

Kinabalu is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 7 days:
  • Major: Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Jungle-treks, Nature-walks, Ecology, Orangutan-watching, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Mountain-treks, Swimming, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

The 4.5* Gayana Eco Resort has 52 over-water cabins and is a great base from which to experience the coral-rich waters off Borneo. Situated on a jungle covered island near Kota Kinabalu, you can drop straight from your room into nature, or grab a boat to the mainland for a trip to the orangutan sanctuaries or Mount Kinabalu.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Kota Kinabalu (<1h away) is the main travel hub for the region. Overland and sea travel are slow, but interesting.
  • Weather: hot and humid all year round. Expect a short but spectacular daily jungle shower Nov-Jan.
  • Warning: Sarawak is a remote jungle area and while its better hotels and restaurants are good, they are not yet comparable with the high-end luxury of Peninsular Malaysia.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Being able to actively conserve the natural environment you have come to see is a great addition to the eco-lodge experience. Gayana has an on-site Marine Ecology Center where you can plant corals and propagate endangered giant clams during your stay. If you want more, take a magnificent overnight trip to Sandakan’s orangutan sanctuary and Turtle Island, or a day trip to nearby Rasa Ria’s bijou sanctuary. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Wild Cave Island

What it feels like to be there...

With its beautiful 5* villas located on white sandy beaches between calm coral seas and pristine primary jungle Peninsular Malaysia is a place that really knows how to do luxury adventures. Grab your khakis and swing through the trees with the monkeys, before cooling off with a snorkel over bright and bountiful reefs.

What to do there…

Terengganu is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 10 days:
  • Major: Scuba-diving, Jungle-treks, Cooking-classes, Art-classes, Nature-walks, Canopy-walks, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Tennis, Snorkelling, Boat-trips, Cycling, Cultural-visits, Swimming.

Where to stay…

The 5* Tanjong Jara Resort is the perfect base for exploring the spectacular reefs of Tenggol Island and the virgin jungle to the east of the Taman Negara National Park. It offers a fantastic range of activities to stimulate body, mind and spirit, and serves the very pinnacle of Malaysian fine cuisine.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan are around 1h away by car and have well-connected regional airports.
  • Weather: it is warm and humid all year round, with short daily showers in the cooler season, Nov-Feb
  • Warning: Taman Negara is a remote jungle – the canopy walk and waterfalls are fantastic, but getting there can be tough.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The East Coast of Malaysia feels light years away from the bustle of daily life, but you don’t feel isolated in a tourist bubble, you are part of a living and breathing community. A short walk down the exclusive beach or a trip to the jungle, river or islands will bring you into the lives of friendly locals, who are happy to share their arts, beliefs, traditions and exciting foods. Try everything! We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Pristine Peninsula

Best of all, the communities of Sumba will welcome and revere you just because you are a Nihiwatu guest, so take a break from yoga, surfing, fishing and relaxing to spend some time with them. What it feels like to be there...

Angkor is everything an ancient temple should be – and more. The sheer scale is incredible, with mile after mile of stunning structures to explore, some covered in ornate carvings and others overgrown by giant trees and twisting vines. Culture, history and art are the highlights, but there are great opportunities for physical activity too.

What to do there…

Siem Reap is packed with activities and perfect for 7 to 10 days:
  • Major: Cultural-visits, Historical-sites, Art-classes, Spa/Massage, Bird-watching, Elephant-riding, Cycling, Hot-air-ballooning, Micro-lights, Scenic-flights.
  • Other: Gym/Fitness, Quad-bikes, Golf, Cooking-classes, Ecology, Horse-riding, Boat-trips, Swimming.

Where to stay…

The 5* Hotel de la Paix is a work of art in itself, offering stunning experience packages, especially in the areas of community, spa and culture. The 4* Heritage Suites is an exquisite alternative, providing an impressive range of activities through its in-house adventures company. Either would be a perfect base for experiencing Angkor.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (4h apart over land) both have international airports with connections across Asia.
  • Weather: hot and humid all year round, with short, sharp monsoon showers common from May-Oct.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Walking through the Angkor temples is an exciting and intimate experience. Almost no other site in the world offers such unrestricted access to its ruins, yet the intense beauty makes it feel private despite the many other visitors. Stare in awe at sprawling temple-scapes, intricate carvings and the ravages of nature on stone. This is truly a wonder of the world and a great adventure. What it feels like to be there...

When you think of South East Asia you imagine a world of sizzling street foods, meditating monks, ornate carvings lacquered in gold, limestone cliffs and islands rising out of turquoise seas. And it is this last image that makes the region a paradise for intrepid adventurers. Try some of the world’s best locations for rock-climbing, scuba-diving, caving or jungle treks, or get massaged into submission.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The main travel hubs are Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and from these the region is well served by national and cheap-flight carriers. Getting around quickly and comfortably is straightforward. South East Asia is primarily tropical, so it is hot and humid all year round. It is affected by two annual monsoons (Indian Ocean side and Pacific side), but the rain is usually confined to short downpours in the late afternoon, so don’t be put off. European languages are understood in tourist areas, especially English. Getting money from cash machines is easy with any major card provider, especially in airports, hotels, banks and mini-markets.
