One week from £1895pp - based on 2 sharing, including flights and B&B accommodation at a featured hotel

What it feels like to be there...

Borneo has all the ingredients for an amazing adventure: colourful coral reefs, turquoise seas, white sand, dense jungle, deep dark caves, a towering mountain, and an orangutan or two. What more could you need? How about a stylish eco-lodge to relax in while you observe - and help conserve - this island paradise?

What to do there…

Kinabalu is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 7 days:
  • Major: Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Jungle-treks, Nature-walks, Ecology, Orangutan-watching, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Mountain-treks, Swimming, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

The 4.5* Gayana Eco Resort has 52 over-water cabins and is a great base from which to experience the coral-rich waters off Borneo. Situated on a jungle covered island near Kota Kinabalu, you can drop straight from your room into nature, or grab a boat to the mainland for a trip to the orangutan sanctuaries or Mount Kinabalu.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Kota Kinabalu (<1h away) is the main travel hub for the region. Overland and sea travel are slow, but interesting.
  • Weather: hot and humid all year round. Expect a short but spectacular daily jungle shower Nov-Jan.
  • Warning: Sarawak is a remote jungle area and while its better hotels and restaurants are good, they are not yet comparable with the high-end luxury of Peninsular Malaysia.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Being able to actively conserve the natural environment you have come to see is a great addition to the eco-lodge experience. Gayana has an on-site Marine Ecology Center where you can plant corals and propagate endangered giant clams during your stay. If you want more, take a magnificent overnight trip to Sandakan’s orangutan sanctuary and Turtle Island, or a day trip to nearby Rasa Ria’s bijou sanctuary. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Wild Cave Island

What to do there…

Terengganu is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 10 days:
  • Major: Scuba-diving, Jungle-treks, Cooking-classes, Art-classes, Nature-walks, Canopy-walks, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Tennis, Snorkelling, Boat-trips, Cycling, Cultural-visits, Swimming.

The 5* Tanjong Jara Resort is the perfect base for exploring the spectacular reefs of Tenggol Island and the virgin jungle to the east of the Taman Negara National Park. Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan are around 1h away by car and have well-connected regional airports.
  • Weather: it is warm and humid all year round, with short daily showers in the cooler season, Nov-Feb
  • Warning: Taman Negara is a remote jungle – the canopy walk and waterfalls are fantastic, but getting there can be tough.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The East Coast of Malaysia feels light years away from the bustle of daily life, but you don’t feel isolated in a tourist bubble, you are part of a living and breathing community. A short walk down the exclusive beach or a trip to the jungle, river or islands will bring you into the lives of friendly locals, who are happy to share their arts, beliefs, traditions and exciting foods. Try everything! We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Pristine Peninsula

What it feels like to be there...

‘Malaysia: Truly Asia’ is the slogan proudly professed in the country’s famous TV ads – and with good reason. Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures and its natural environment has a tremendous variety too.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Kuala Lumpur is the main travel hub for Malaysia and cheap flights to the rest of the country are easy to pick up there. Island Malaysia (Borneo) is covered in tropical rainforest, and is hot and wet all year. Peninsula Malaysia’s west coast has the most reliable sunshine.

Nestled within pristine rainforest leading down to a private white sand beach, 5* The Datai Langkawi is our favourite way to experience Langkawi. This is a stunning hideaway at the very heart of nature; footpaths through the jungle connect the resort, its free-standing private villas and two pools. The beach overlooks the azure waters of the Andaman Sea.

Choose from the great range of watersports on offer or the wide variety of treatments at the award-winning Spa . The 18-hole championship Datai Bay Golf Course is minutes away and mountain-bikes are available to explore the island. Leading online travel magazine Smart Travel Asia says "The Datai is the original Langkawi gem. It looks its best at night when the uplights come on, igniting the forest canopy."

What it feels like to be there...

When you think of South East Asia you imagine a world of sizzling street foods, meditating monks, ornate carvings lacquered in gold, limestone cliffs and islands rising out of turquoise seas. And it is this last image that makes the region a paradise for intrepid adventurers. Try some of the world’s best locations for rock-climbing, scuba-diving, caving or jungle treks, or get massaged into submission.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The main travel hubs are Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and from these the region is well served by national and cheap-flight carriers. Getting around quickly and comfortably is straightforward. South East Asia is primarily tropical, so it is hot and humid all year round. It is affected by two annual monsoons (Indian Ocean side and Pacific side), but the rain is usually confined to short downpours in the late afternoon, so don’t be put off. European languages are understood in tourist areas, especially English. Getting money from cash machines is easy with any major card provider, especially in airports, hotels, banks and mini-markets.
