What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

At over 3,300m, climbing Mount Etna is a challenge, but what makes it truly special is the scene that greets you at the top. A barren, black, lava-coated landscape, capped with ice and still fuming from some of its craters. At night you can often see the orange glow as molten rocks spurt out and run down the sides. Fortunately, it is so closely monitored there is little real danger! We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

France has pretty much perfected ‘living well’. Be it fine cuisine or country kitchen goodness, spending time in the great outdoors or in the café scene among friends, everything is in balance. Climb rocks, ski the slopes and canoe the rivers, but to really fit in take time for a glass of wine and some patisserie on the way.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Paris and Nice are France’s busiest airports, but for the Alpine region it can be better to fly into Geneva, Switzerland, and continue overland from there. The roads are great, but toll stops take time and costs add up on longer trips. Dress for the temperate climate but be ready with a good jacket if you head up in the mountains.

Since classical times, Greece’s 1,400 islands, dramatic cliffs and blue seas have provided inspiration for many epic odysseys. Set sail and start to write your own tales of adventure, before retiring to a luxurious palace and a feast fit for the gods. If that isn’t enough for you, there are 17 UNESCO world heritage sites to explore.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Athens is the main international transport hub for the country, but many of the islands have direct links to major European cities. The climate is warm-to-hot all year, with relatively little rainfall, so dress light and airy.

What it feels like to be there...

Beautiful Italy is a place of style and substance. Being surrounded by art, fine dining, elegant clothes and exquisite architecture is to experience humanity at its finest, but nature still has a lot to offer too. Challenge yourself to paint a fresco scene or cross a picturesque mountain pass before surrendering to Roman-style decadence.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Rome and Milan are the largest airports in the country, but these days the cheap-fares airlines have opened up routes to lots of others. Onward travel overland by road is good, but train tickets, especially first class, can be really great value and offer a local’s view of Italy.  To really fit in, bring a stylish outfit for every occasion and weather.

What it feels like to be there...

Turkey has seen the rise and fall of countless great civilisations, from Troy and Byzantium to the Ottoman Empire and beyond – all leaving their mark. Nowadays it has a friendly Middle-Eastern vibe, with strong-flavoured stews and warm hospitality always on the menu. The rugged landscape is a hotbed of adventure activities too.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Istanbul is the country’s main travel hub, with regular connections to Europe, America and beyond. Domestic connections to key tourist areas are regular and good value compared with overland travel, which is long and sometimes hard going. Dress for hot weather, except during the freezing winters on the central Anatolian plateau.

What it feels like to be there...

The Mediterranean region has always been a foodie’s paradise. For thousands of years the wealth of produce has sustained a tapestry of cultures and civilisations, all leaving their mark. What better way to relax after a challenging mountain adventure than to descend to castles and palaces and feast on the finest cuisine known to man?

Some practical information worth knowing…

Intercontinental travel mostly arrives via the super-airports in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid and Amsterdam, but all the capitals and many other cities are superbly well connected. Flights within the region are frequent and often good value if booked well in advance. Otherwise, the road network is generally good for overland journeys. The weather in Southern Europe is beautifully temperate, rarely getting uncomfortably hot or cold. The main exception is high in the mountains where wind chill can be bitingly cold. Layers and a good wind-proof jacket should fix that though. The vast majority of nationalities are eligible for visas on arrival, and wide adoption of the Euro has made getting money for the trip easy.
