What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Fine living and mutual respect is the Italian way, and just a few friendly words in the local language can open doors: a fabulous trattoria, a special wine recommendation, a stunning vantage point off the tourist trail, or a magically ornate church fresco. Make friends with your guides and bartenders and enjoy where they lead you. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

Sandwiched between imposing Mount Etna and the beautiful Ionian Sea, Taormina is a pretty Sicilian town in a treat of a location. There are so many great historical sites and exciting things to do it is a real struggle to work out what to leave out. Why not jump in a helicopter and pick your favourites from the air?

What to do there…

Taormina is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Volcano-treks, Cultural-visits, Historical-sites, Sailing, Boat-trips, Fishing, Scuba-diving, Spa/Massage, Photography, Scenic-flights, Cooking-classes.
  • Other: Snorkelling, Swimming, Gym/Fitness, Library.

Where to stay…

The 5* Grand Hotel Timeo by Orient-Express is the perfect place from which to explore Sicily. Its pretty garden walkways and grand terraces have a real sense of occasion, and the cool opulence of the bedrooms puts you at ease. 4* Villa Carlotta is a stunning alternative, stylishly furnished, filled with artistic touches and blessed with panoramic viewpoints.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Taormina is 1h drive from Catania Airport, a 1.5h flight from Rome. Naples is 1h flight from both Catania and Rome and 1.5h from the Amalfi Coast.
  • Weather: warm all year round, hot Jun-Sep, wetter Oct-Feb.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

At over 3,300m, climbing Mount Etna is a challenge, but what makes it truly special is the scene that greets you at the top. A barren, black, lava-coated landscape, capped with ice and still fuming from some of its craters. At night you can often see the orange glow as molten rocks spurt out and run down the sides. Fortunately, it is so closely monitored there is little real danger! We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

Beautiful Italy is a place of style and substance. Being surrounded by art, fine dining, elegant clothes and exquisite architecture is to experience humanity at its finest, but nature still has a lot to offer too. Challenge yourself to paint a fresco scene or cross a picturesque mountain pass before surrendering to Roman-style decadence.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Rome and Milan are the largest airports in the country, but these days the cheap-fares airlines have opened up routes to lots of others. Onward travel overland by road is good, but train tickets, especially first class, can be really great value and offer a local’s view of Italy.  To really fit in, bring a stylish outfit for every occasion and weather.

Set high in the rocky hills on the east coast of Sicily, 5* Grand Hotel Timeo by Orient-Express has long been known as one of Italy’s most glamorous retreats. The first hotel to be built in Taormina, it sits in the most perfect location, directly in front of the Greek Theatre. Sweeping views of the coastline and majestic Mount Etna stretch out beyond. This heritage building is a landmark within its destination.

Let Sicily come to you as you admire its gardens, savour sensational local cuisine and sit out on the Literary Terrace where generations of celebrated guests have gathered. Sun, sea, snow, fire: the four elements are found in abundance in this geologically fascinating region. Get close to the island’s natural resources by diving and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters around Taormina and the Aeolian, where shallow coves teem with fish; walk along craters and wind your way through the lava of Mount Etna, whose snow-capped summit can be seen from all over Sicily; or admire the shimmering salt marshes between Marsala and Trapani.

What it feels like to be there...

The Mediterranean region has always been a foodie’s paradise. For thousands of years the wealth of produce has sustained a tapestry of cultures and civilisations, all leaving their mark. What better way to relax after a challenging mountain adventure than to descend to castles and palaces and feast on the finest cuisine known to man?

Some practical information worth knowing…

Intercontinental travel mostly arrives via the super-airports in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid and Amsterdam, but all the capitals and many other cities are superbly well connected. Flights within the region are frequent and often good value if booked well in advance. Otherwise, the road network is generally good for overland journeys. The weather in Southern Europe is beautifully temperate, rarely getting uncomfortably hot or cold. The main exception is high in the mountains where wind chill can be bitingly cold. Layers and a good wind-proof jacket should fix that though. The vast majority of nationalities are eligible for visas on arrival, and wide adoption of the Euro has made getting money for the trip easy.
