What it feels like to be there...

High in the majestic Himalayas, the amazing warmth of the Bhutanese people offsets the cool mountain climate. Colourful prayer flags flicker on bridges and peak markers, and the amazing Taktsang monastery clings to a near-vertical rock face. Become one of the few foreigners ever to have marvelled at this ancient land.

What to do there…

Paro is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 7 days:
  • Major: Hiking, Cultural-visits, Historical-sites, Fishing, Rafting, Nature-walks, Spa/Massage, Yoga.
  • Other: Archery, Mountain-biking, Golf, Swimming.

Where to stay…

5* Amankora is the perfect way to experience a Himalayan nirvana. Its 5 ultra-luxury lodges are positioned across the country, near all the top sights, to show off the very best of Bhutan. The 5* Uma Paro, located in Bhutan’s most accessible and adventure-packed region, is an epic alternative, offering great tailored experience packages.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: the airport is just a few minutes away from Paro’s hotels and around 1h from Thimphu by 4x4.
  • Weather: cool and mild all year round, getting colder with altitude and in winter months, Nov-Feb.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

As you walk across a windswept bridge, dodging the threads of the prayer flags whipping in the breeze, Bhutanese kids will run excitedly to welcome you. They will take you to watch their fathers competing in archery tournaments and point out the most beautiful temples and painted houses. Then, with a friendly smile, they will wave you on your way. Travel as it should be. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Himalayan Nirvana

One week from £1095pp - based on 2 sharing, including flights and B&B accommodation at a featured hotel

What it feels like to be there...

Sri Lanka’s Sigiriya rock is a gigantic natural wonder made even greater by human endeavour. Steps carved into its steep sides and precarious rope walkways take you up, past exquisite erotic art, to the fortress at the summit. Along the way you pass through the huge rock-hewn Lion gate, to the baths, palaces and temples beyond.

What to do there…

Sigiriya is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Elephant-riding, Horse-riding, Mountain-biking, Bird-watching, Nature-walks, Boat-trips, Spa/Massage, Jungle-treks, Community-projects, Cultural-visits, Historical-sites.
  • Other: Safari, Cave-treks, Music, Gym/Fitness, Swimming, Tennis, Badminton, Ecology, Hot-air-ballooning Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

5* Heritance Kandalama is an eco-design masterpiece from renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, who cleverly blended the 160-room hotel into the rock faces and surrounding jungle, using stilts so animals can pass underneath on their way to the lake. The stylish rooms and activities concierge make the hotel a great luxury adventure base.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Sigiriya to Colombo airport by car takes 2-3h and it is a further 3-4h on to Godellawela on the southern coast, or a short sea-plane transfer.
  • Weather: except the cooler mountain areas, Sri Lanka is hot all year. Tropical showers are frequent (less in Dec-Mar).

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

With dense, warm jungle all around, ancient temple complexes to the north and east, cool tea plantations in the mountains to the south and beautiful beaches just a day’s drive away, this area is packed with activities to excite your body, mind and spirit. Take time to enjoy the small things, such as a simple but refreshing jungle shower viewed from the comfort of your hotel. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

Bhutan is a fantasy come to life: a remote Himalayan kingdom where few foreigners have ever travelled and Gross National Happiness is valued over GDP. Gaze in amazement at archery tournaments and trek to mystical temples that cling to treacherous rock faces. Look out for the fascinating Tsechu mask festival held once a year.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Paro is the country’s only airport, with flights to Kathmandu, Bangkok, New Delhi and Kolkata. These fill up quickly and should be booked several months in advance alongside seeking visa permission (though it is not stamped until arrival). Road travel by 4x4 is good between cities but limited elsewhere, especially in the cold winters.

Luxurious hotels provide the ultimate in relaxation, while the seas are an adventure playground offering every conceivable watersport to stimulate your becalmed senses.

Some practical information worth knowing…

What it feels like to be there...

Facing the Maldives on the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has some truly great diving to offer. But throw in elephant treks in tall rainforests, ancient temples and the freshest cup of tea in the world, and you have a truly special location. The erotic art walkway that clings to the steep sides of the Sigiriya rock is exciting in more ways than one!

Some practical information worth knowing…

Most flights arrive at Colombo on the west of the island. This is also the best place to pick up cash for souvenirs. The weather is generally hot and humid, but cool respite can be sought up in the hills where the tea is grown.

Combining the Sanskrit word for ‘peace’ with kora or ‘circular pilgrimage’ in Dzongkha, the Bhutanese language, 5* Amankora is a series of lodges across the central and western valleys of Bhutan. The sole surviving Himalayan Buddhist Kingdom, Bhutan is located between the Tibetan Plateau and India, making it one of the most remote and pristine environments on earth. Descending from 7,000-metre high peaks in the north to the low-lying plains of the south, Bhutan’s rivers have forged deep valleys separated by high mountain passes. Historically isolated, each valley’s scenic beauty and topography affords visitors an opportunity for unique journeys of discovery between them.

To best experience all that Bhutan has to offer, Amankora can tailor journeys that include a combination of its lodges located in the valleys of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang.

What it feels like to be there...

From the highest point on earth, up in the Himalayas, down to the many splendid coral islands in the Indian Ocean, this region can genuinely claim to have all things for all adventurers. More than that, the rich tapestry of temples, cultures, foods and people offers inspiration and intrigue at every turn. Find or lose yourself with equal ease as you revel in all that continental Asia has to offer.

Some practical information worth knowing…

The main travel hubs in the region are the Indian cities of Mumbai and Delhi, though lots of other capitals now have direct flights from big cities around the world. The weather varies enormously, but it’s safe to say it is usually cold in the high mountains of the north and hot on the tropical beaches in the south. The Indian Ocean monsoons can make late afternoons pretty wet in warmer months too. Aim to get the currency you need at your arrival airport or the hotel because banking in rural areas can be difficult. English is very widely spoken and other European languages are known in tourist areas.
