Country – Bhutan

What it feels like to be there…

Bhutan is a fantasy come to life: a remote Himalayan kingdom where few foreigners have ever travelled and Gross National Happiness is valued over GDP. Gaze in amazement at archery tournaments and trek to mystical temples that cling to treacherous rock faces. Look out for the fascinating Tsechu mask festival held once a year.

Some practical information worth knowing…

Paro is the country’s only airport, with flights to Kathmandu, Bangkok, New Delhi and Kolkata. These fill up quickly and should be booked several months in advance alongside seeking visa permission (though it is not stamped until arrival). Road travel by 4×4 is good between cities but limited elsewhere, especially in the cold winters.
