What it feels like to be there…
The mighty Incas of South America had their Capital in Cuzco, in the Andean mountains of Peru. Since its rediscovery in 1911, one image has best symbolised this civilisation – the sunset over Machu Picchu. The dramatic landscapes behind these sacred stones are a big draw for modern-day adventurers. Excellent rock climbing is abundant and the rivers are among the best rafting rapids in the world.

Some practical information worth knowing…
Flights into Peru typically arrive in Lima, though Cuzco airport has a few international connections to nearby South American capitals. The terrain is so steep that air travel is common even to small cities, but the overnight sleeper buses are amazing value and great quality. Local mountain roads are very precarious-looking. In the bright sun it can get warm, but generally layer up and bring an all-weather jacket.
