What it feels like to be there...

Railay is a hidden oasis of beauty. Cut off from the mainland by high cliffs and dense jungle, this tiny peninsula is only accessible by boat. The area is packed with world-beating activities for body, mind and spirit – all from a beautiful luxury base. Neighbouring Phi-Phi Island is home to great diving and was the backdrop to the film.

What to do there…

Railay is packed with activities and perfect for 7 to 10 days:
  • Major: Rock-climbing, Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Cooking-classes, Art-classes, Boat-trips, Cave-treks, Nature-walks, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Gym/Fitness, Sailing, Windsurfing, Swimming, Tennis, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

Home to one of our favourite super-luxury hotels, Railay’s incredible natural environment can be enjoyed in effortless style at the 5* Rayavadee. The hotel exudes opulence and its private activity classes, spa services and fine dining are first class. Railay can also be enjoyed from the sleek, design-conscious 4* Bhu Nga Thani.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Krabi Airport is 1h away by car/speedboat. Phuket Airport is 3.5-4.5h away. Both airports are 1h from Bangkok.
  • Weather: Nov to May is peak season, but off-season offers great seclusion and the rains come in bursts from 2.30-4pm.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Railay has a chilled out, adventurous vibe. The long west beach is linked to the eastern bay by the peninsula’s only shopping strip, a tiny, sandy street with a great coffee and cocktails bar and ice cream parlour. You will share gorgeous cliffs, jungle, beaches and islands with tanned rock-climbers and playful monkeys, but the exclusive Phranang beach and best caves are all right next to Rayavadee. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Andaman Elements

Every so often geography and geology throw us a nice surprise. Sochi is a warm spa town on the Black Sea coast and its neighbour Polyana is a great ski resort in the Western Caucasus. • Other: Swimming, Gym/Fitness, Cycling, Tennis, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

Choose a seaside or mountain base, safe in the knowledge you can do all the available activities from either. 5* Rodina Grand Hotel & Spa is an imperious naval palace with opulent décor and world-class wellness centre. 5* Grand Hotel Polyana is a new luxury ski and spa resort, with amenity-rich rooms, stylish wooden villas and a private cable car station.

  • Weather: mild to warm and humid all year round in Sochi; mild May-Oct and cold and snowy Nov-Apr in Polyana.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

It is fabulous to find a hidden gem and right now Sochi is just that: a little wonderland where few from outside Eastern Europe have ever been. With the 2014 Winter Olympics looming, this place is only going to get bigger. Fortunately with so much attention on its way, Russia wants it done right, so bigger should mean better. We say go now for that ‘I was there’ feeling when the Games hit your TV screen. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Sandwiched between imposing Mount Etna and the beautiful Ionian Sea, Taormina is a pretty Sicilian town in a treat of a location. • Weather: warm all year round, hot Jun-Sep, wetter Oct-Feb.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

At over 3,300m, climbing Mount Etna is a challenge, but what makes it truly special is the scene that greets you at the top. A barren, black, lava-coated landscape, capped with ice and still fuming from some of its craters. At night you can often see the orange glow as molten rocks spurt out and run down the sides. Fortunately, it is so closely monitored there is little real danger! We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

Floating through the mild Pacific waters around the Galapagos, it feels like you are filming a wildlife documentary. Fantastic, unusual creatures with no fear of man allow you to get up close and personal. The underwater wonders are just as fabulous: seals, sea lions, manta rays and hammerheads make this a world-class dive site.

What to do there…

The Galapagos is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Boat-trips, Sailing, Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Hiking, Nature-walks, Photography, Bird-watching, Ecology.
  • Other: Snorkelling, Sun-bathing, Swimming, Jacuzzi, Library.

Where to stay…

The best way to see these amazing islands is from a boat. The key decision is whether you want an expedition vessel or a scuba diving live-aboard. We recommend 'Eclipse' as the best of the former and the ‘Galapagos Aggressors (I & II)’ for the latter.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Galapagos are a 2.5-4h flight from Quito via Guayaquil (connections vary). Cotacachi is 1.5h drive from Quito.
  • Weather: the mainland is warm and humid all year round, wetter Dec-May. Galapagos are dry and warm all year.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The Galapagos is about life; evolution playing out before your eyes. The diving is truly magnificent, so if you have any Cousteau fantasies, qualify before you come and log some warm-up dives. There is so much going on above the water and near the surface that you won’t miss out if you aren’t ready to take the plunge. Day after day of close encounters and perfect photo-opps will keep you fully entertained. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the second largest reef in the world and a great place to dive, whatever your level. The stunning caves you see on land are often replicated under the ocean, but colonised and capped by coral. Amazing! What it feels like to be there...

Borneo has all the ingredients for an amazing adventure: colourful coral reefs, turquoise seas, white sand, dense jungle, deep dark caves, a towering mountain, and an orangutan or two. What more could you need? How about a stylish eco-lodge to relax in while you observe - and help conserve - this island paradise?

What to do there…

Kinabalu is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 7 days:
  • Major: Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Jungle-treks, Nature-walks, Ecology, Orangutan-watching, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Mountain-treks, Swimming, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

The 4.5* Gayana Eco Resort has 52 over-water cabins and is a great base from which to experience the coral-rich waters off Borneo. Situated on a jungle covered island near Kota Kinabalu, you can drop straight from your room into nature, or grab a boat to the mainland for a trip to the orangutan sanctuaries or Mount Kinabalu.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Kota Kinabalu (<1h away) is the main travel hub for the region. Overland and sea travel are slow, but interesting.
  • Weather: hot and humid all year round. Expect a short but spectacular daily jungle shower Nov-Jan.
  • Warning: Sarawak is a remote jungle area and while its better hotels and restaurants are good, they are not yet comparable with the high-end luxury of Peninsular Malaysia.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Being able to actively conserve the natural environment you have come to see is a great addition to the eco-lodge experience. Gayana has an on-site Marine Ecology Center where you can plant corals and propagate endangered giant clams during your stay.
