What it feels like to be there...

Railay is a hidden oasis of beauty. Cut off from the mainland by high cliffs and dense jungle, this tiny peninsula is only accessible by boat. The area is packed with world-beating activities for body, mind and spirit – all from a beautiful luxury base. Neighbouring Phi-Phi Island is home to great diving and was the backdrop to the film.

What to do there…

Railay is packed with activities and perfect for 7 to 10 days:
  • Major: Rock-climbing, Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Cooking-classes, Art-classes, Boat-trips, Cave-treks, Nature-walks, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Gym/Fitness, Sailing, Windsurfing, Swimming, Tennis, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

Home to one of our favourite super-luxury hotels, Railay’s incredible natural environment can be enjoyed in effortless style at the 5* Rayavadee. The hotel exudes opulence and its private activity classes, spa services and fine dining are first class. Railay can also be enjoyed from the sleek, design-conscious 4* Bhu Nga Thani.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Krabi Airport is 1h away by car/speedboat. Phuket Airport is 3.5-4.5h away. Both airports are 1h from Bangkok.
  • Weather: Nov to May is peak season, but off-season offers great seclusion and the rains come in bursts from 2.30-4pm.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Railay has a chilled out, adventurous vibe. The long west beach is linked to the eastern bay by the peninsula’s only shopping strip, a tiny, sandy street with a great coffee and cocktails bar and ice cream parlour. You will share gorgeous cliffs, jungle, beaches and islands with tanned rock-climbers and playful monkeys, but the exclusive Phranang beach and best caves are all right next to Rayavadee. Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Santorini is 1h flight or 6h ferry from Athens.
  • Weather: dry and sunny all year round, hot May-Oct.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Santorini has traditionally been seen as a place with relaxing spas, great views and pretty churches, but it actually offers so much more. There are few better places to sail, starting in the sheltered caldera lagoon, then venturing out to nearby islands. Or jump on a horse and trek across the island, taking in the panoramic vistas of the Aegean, then finish the day tasting traditional sweet Vinsantos wine. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Sparkling Santorini

What it feels like to be there...

Floating through the mild Pacific waters around the Galapagos, it feels like you are filming a wildlife documentary. Fantastic, unusual creatures with no fear of man allow you to get up close and personal. The underwater wonders are just as fabulous: seals, sea lions, manta rays and hammerheads make this a world-class dive site.

What to do there…

The Galapagos is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Boat-trips, Sailing, Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Hiking, Nature-walks, Photography, Bird-watching, Ecology.
  • Other: Snorkelling, Sun-bathing, Swimming, Jacuzzi, Library.

Where to stay…

The best way to see these amazing islands is from a boat. The key decision is whether you want an expedition vessel or a scuba diving live-aboard. We recommend 'Eclipse' as the best of the former and the ‘Galapagos Aggressors (I & II)’ for the latter.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Galapagos are a 2.5-4h flight from Quito via Guayaquil (connections vary). Cotacachi is 1.5h drive from Quito.
  • Weather: the mainland is warm and humid all year round, wetter Dec-May. Galapagos are dry and warm all year.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The Galapagos is about life; evolution playing out before your eyes. The diving is truly magnificent, so if you have any Cousteau fantasies, qualify before you come and log some warm-up dives. There is so much going on above the water and near the surface that you won’t miss out if you aren’t ready to take the plunge. Day after day of close encounters and perfect photo-opps will keep you fully entertained. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

The Great Barrier Reef is an immense and beautiful natural wonder. Teeming with life and colour, it would take more than 10 hours to drive its length. The warm sea laps the white-golden sands of the surrounding islands and coasts, and jungle palms flutter and wave back at the giant clams and turtles in the shallows.

What to do there…

The Barrier Reef is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Sailing, Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Boat-trips, Spa/Massage, Wine-tasting.
  • Other: Snorkelling, Swimming, Gym/Fitness, Golf, Library.

Where to stay…

5* Qualia sits on the white-sand jungle islands of the Whitsundays at the south end of the Barrier Reef. Dedicated to sensory experiences, the blend of exciting water sports, relaxing spas and fine dining make it a magnificent resort. 5* Sea Temple Resort & Spa Port Douglas, at the north end, is a great alternative, with direct access to rainforests and reef.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Hamilton Island is 1.5h from Cairns or Brisbane by air, 2-3h from Sydney and Melbourne. Port Douglas and Daintree are 1-2h north of Cairns by car.
  • Weather: hot and wet year round (dryer in winter, Jun-Aug)

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The Barrier Reef is one of the best places in the world to get a perfect aquarium-style underwater view. It is so huge, bright and interesting at relatively shallow depths that even non-divers see it in style. The decadent hotels and yachts offer plenty of relaxing luxuriousness to accompany the exciting adventures on the water. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What it feels like to be there...

Borneo has all the ingredients for an amazing adventure: colourful coral reefs, turquoise seas, white sand, dense jungle, deep dark caves, a towering mountain, and an orangutan or two. What more could you need? How about a stylish eco-lodge to relax in while you observe - and help conserve - this island paradise?

What to do there…

Kinabalu is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 7 days:
  • Major: Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Jungle-treks, Nature-walks, Ecology, Orangutan-watching, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Mountain-treks, Swimming, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

The 4.5* Gayana Eco Resort has 52 over-water cabins and is a great base from which to experience the coral-rich waters off Borneo. Situated on a jungle covered island near Kota Kinabalu, you can drop straight from your room into nature, or grab a boat to the mainland for a trip to the orangutan sanctuaries or Mount Kinabalu.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Kota Kinabalu (<1h away) is the main travel hub for the region. Overland and sea travel are slow, but interesting.
  • Weather: hot and humid all year round. Expect a short but spectacular daily jungle shower Nov-Jan.
  • Warning: Sarawak is a remote jungle area and while its better hotels and restaurants are good, they are not yet comparable with the high-end luxury of Peninsular Malaysia.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Being able to actively conserve the natural environment you have come to see is a great addition to the eco-lodge experience. Gayana has an on-site Marine Ecology Center where you can plant corals and propagate endangered giant clams during your stay. If you want more, take a magnificent overnight trip to Sandakan’s orangutan sanctuary and Turtle Island, or a day trip to nearby Rasa Ria’s bijou sanctuary. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Wild Cave Island
