The Lapland Alps rise out of Arctic fjords like enormous cliff walls straining to hold back giant snowdrifts. Speedboat along the water, picking out the lines you plan to carve down the mountainside. Then, with oxygen-rich air surging into your lungs, trek up 1,000m+ peaks, finishing the day with the off-piste ride of your life.

  • Travel: Tromso is about 2h from Lyngen by car + ferry or the same from Karasjok via Lakselv (<1h flight + 1h car). Storfjord is about 2h from Oslo via Aalesund (<1h flight + <1h car).
  • Weather: freezing Nov-Mar, cool Apr-Oct.

The winter wonder of the Northern Lights is best seen from January to early March, while the ski season continues until May. If you go for the beautiful Karasjok dog-sled lodges, you forgo a little luxury but gain so much in charming remote exclusivity that you won’t notice.
