What it feels like to be there...

Railay is a hidden oasis of beauty. Cut off from the mainland by high cliffs and dense jungle, this tiny peninsula is only accessible by boat. The area is packed with world-beating activities for body, mind and spirit – all from a beautiful luxury base. Neighbouring Phi-Phi Island is home to great diving and was the backdrop to the film.

What to do there…

Railay is packed with activities and perfect for 7 to 10 days:
  • Major: Rock-climbing, Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Cooking-classes, Art-classes, Boat-trips, Cave-treks, Nature-walks, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Gym/Fitness, Sailing, Windsurfing, Swimming, Tennis, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

Home to one of our favourite super-luxury hotels, Railay’s incredible natural environment can be enjoyed in effortless style at the 5* Rayavadee. The hotel exudes opulence and its private activity classes, spa services and fine dining are first class. Railay can also be enjoyed from the sleek, design-conscious 4* Bhu Nga Thani.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Krabi Airport is 1h away by car/speedboat. Phuket Airport is 3.5-4.5h away. Both airports are 1h from Bangkok.
  • Weather: Nov to May is peak season, but off-season offers great seclusion and the rains come in bursts from 2.30-4pm.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Railay has a chilled out, adventurous vibe. The long west beach is linked to the eastern bay by the peninsula’s only shopping strip, a tiny, sandy street with a great coffee and cocktails bar and ice cream parlour. You will share gorgeous cliffs, jungle, beaches and islands with tanned rock-climbers and playful monkeys, but the exclusive Phranang beach and best caves are all right next to Rayavadee. What it feels like to be there...

Beneath the mighty peak of the Matterhorn is the pretty, bustling town of Zermatt. The quiet buzz of electric cars is the only traffic noise, but the strains of jolly Alpine bands spill out from the shops on to the streets. Chocolate-brown houses, laden with flower boxes, contrast with the jagged, icy mountains on the close horizon.

What to do there…

Zermatt is packed with activities and perfect for 7 days:
  • Major: Skiing/Snowboarding, Off-Piste, Sledging, Snow-shoeing, Ice-climbing, Ice-skating, Paragliding, Spa/Massage, Cultural-visits, Hiking, Mountain-biking, Fishing, Rock-climbing, Downhill-scooters.
  • Other: Gym/Fitness, Swimming, Yoga, Pilates, Cinema.

Where to stay…

High on a cliff-face above the centre of town sits gorgeous 5* The Omnia. Accessed through a tunnel and 45m lift through the rock, the drama of your entry is surpassed only by the amazing views from within. The epitome of designer chic, this hotel aims to magnify the splendour of nature and the elements, ensuring you an exciting stay.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Zermatt and Montana are about 3-3.5h drive from Geneva, Zurich and Basel or 2.5h from Bern (similar by train).
  • Weather: warm/showery May-Oct, cool/snowy Nov-Apr.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

The peaks around Zermatt have the altitude for year-round skiing, but in summer this area is a mountaineer’s paradise. Scaling the summit of the Matterhorn has been every climber’s dream since Edward Whymper first conquered it in 1865. Sadly, four of his party fell to their deaths on the descent, but the route is now established and readily achievable with the right guide, equipment and coaching. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: What's the Matter?

Its staff are experts at tailoring and arranging activities for every mood. Our other favourite is the elegantly modern designer 5* The Chedi Chiang Mai.

What it feels like to be there...

Borneo has all the ingredients for an amazing adventure: colourful coral reefs, turquoise seas, white sand, dense jungle, deep dark caves, a towering mountain, and an orangutan or two. What more could you need? How about a stylish eco-lodge to relax in while you observe - and help conserve - this island paradise?

What to do there…

Kinabalu is packed with activities and perfect for 5 to 7 days:
  • Major: Scuba-diving, Sea-kayaking, Jungle-treks, Nature-walks, Ecology, Orangutan-watching, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Mountain-treks, Swimming, Kid-friendly.

Where to stay…

The 4.5* Gayana Eco Resort has 52 over-water cabins and is a great base from which to experience the coral-rich waters off Borneo. Situated on a jungle covered island near Kota Kinabalu, you can drop straight from your room into nature, or grab a boat to the mainland for a trip to the orangutan sanctuaries or Mount Kinabalu.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Kota Kinabalu (<1h away) is the main travel hub for the region. Overland and sea travel are slow, but interesting.
  • Weather: hot and humid all year round. Expect a short but spectacular daily jungle shower Nov-Jan.
  • Warning: Sarawak is a remote jungle area and while its better hotels and restaurants are good, they are not yet comparable with the high-end luxury of Peninsular Malaysia.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Being able to actively conserve the natural environment you have come to see is a great addition to the eco-lodge experience. Gayana has an on-site Marine Ecology Center where you can plant corals and propagate endangered giant clams during your stay. If you want more, take a magnificent overnight trip to Sandakan’s orangutan sanctuary and Turtle Island, or a day trip to nearby Rasa Ria’s bijou sanctuary. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Wild Cave Island

What it feels like to be there...

Angkor is everything an ancient temple should be – and more. The sheer scale is incredible, with mile after mile of stunning structures to explore, some covered in ornate carvings and others overgrown by giant trees and twisting vines. Culture, history and art are the highlights, but there are great opportunities for physical activity too.

Siem Reap is packed with activities and perfect for 7 to 10 days:

Where to stay…

The 5* Hotel de la Paix is a work of art in itself, offering stunning experience packages, especially in the areas of community, spa and culture. The 4* Heritage Suites is an exquisite alternative, providing an impressive range of activities through its in-house adventures company. Either would be a perfect base for experiencing Angkor.

Some practical information worth knowing…

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Walking through the Angkor temples is an exciting and intimate experience. Almost no other site in the world offers such unrestricted access to its ruins, yet the intense beauty makes it feel private despite the many other visitors. AT07 – Mystical Valleys

One week from £1975pp – based on 2 sharing, including flights and B&B accommodation at a featured hotel What it feels like to be   Find out more.

One week from £1975pp - based on 2 sharing, including flights and B&B accommodation at a featured hotel

What it feels like to be there...

As gentle mists shroud unfathomably steep, verdant valleys, your eyes will widen as you struggle to take in the beauty of the view. But this is just the backdrop to Yuzi Paradise, a billion dollar, 1,320-acre park dedicated to the creation of art. A stay here is an adventure that will inspire the artist in you.

What to do there…

Guilin is packed with activities and perfect for 7 to 10 days:
  • Major: Art-classes, Cycling, Nature-walks, Cave-treks, Yoga, Meditation, Tai-chi, Spa/Massage.
  • Other: Boat-trips, Fishing, Hiking, Kid-friendly, Swimming.

Where to stay…

The 5* Hotel of Modern Art (HOMA) is at the heart of Yuzi Paradise. It pairs each group of guests with a VIP host whose job is to anticipate your every need and facilitate your every whim. Stay in luxurious and, of course, artistically designed rooms, and let your host arrange the perfect blend of action, art and indulgence.

Some practical information worth knowing…

  • Travel: Guilin airport is 1.5h from Hong Kong (HK) or 2.5h from Shanghai. Guilin to Lijiang flights change in Kunming or Chongqing (2h flying + connection). Lijiang to HK or Shanghai flights connect similarly and take at least 5h.
  • Weather: Guilin is hot Jun-Sep and wet Apr-Jul, otherwise mild and generally dry. Lijiang is cold Nov-Feb and wet Jun-Sep, otherwise mild and generally dry.
  • Warning: Lijiang is special, but getting there takes a day of internal travel. Consider HK for ‘extensions’ <4 days.

What the AdventureTemples travel community says…

Trips to China are sometimes hard work, but always very rewarding. HOMA offers something different, though; a trip where the biggest challenge is choosing between activities, classes and spa treatments. Otherwise, it is pure pleasure in a scenic location. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. To add a comment or check out what our community has to say, please click here: Mystical Valleys
